Wednesday: When the Valley Is Part of the Plan

Nobody chooses the valley. But according to Psalm 23, the valley is not a detour. It is part of the path the Shepherd leads His sheep through. This is one of the most important and often overlooked truths in this beloved psalm. God never promised His children a life free from hardship. Jesus was direct about it: in this world, you will have trouble. Suffering is not a sign that God has abandoned you. It is often the very place where He does His deepest work. Character is not built on the mountaintop. It is built in the valley, where the path is dark and the way forward is unclear. It is in those moments that faith becomes real, not just a concept, but a lifeline. Notice something beautiful in the way David writes this psalm. When he describes the green pastures and still waters, he speaks about God in the third person. He leads me. He restores me. But when he reaches the darkest valley, the language shifts. He speaks directly to God. You are with me. In the hardest moments, God becomes most personal. You are not alone in your valley. The Shepherd is right there with you.

Looking back at a difficult season in your life, can you see evidence of God's presence with you even when it did not feel like He was near?

It is important to note that the valley of the shadow of death is as much God's right path for us as the green pastures which lie beside quiet waters. That is, the Christian life is not always tranquil, nor, as we say, a mountaintop experiences. God gives us valleys also. It is in the valleys with the trials and dangers that we develop character.

Prayer

Lord, when the valley feels overwhelming, remind me that You are closer than I can imagine. Give me the courage to trust Your presence even when I cannot see the way forward. Amen.
