Wednesday: Living by Faith, Not by Sight

Devotional
One small verse in Habakkuk became the backbone of the New Testament. The righteous shall live by faith. Paul quotes it. The writer of Hebrews quotes it. It is not a minor footnote. It is a foundation. But what does it actually mean to live by faith? It is not a feeling. It is not blind optimism. Faith is the confident expectation of God's promises, rooted in who God is. It is trusting His character when circumstances are confusing, choosing to honor Him when it would be easier not to. Babylon in Habakkuk's day was the opposite of this. Babylon trusted in its own strength, its own wealth, its own systems. And God pronounced judgment on every one of those misplaced trusts. Greed. Violence. Exploitation. Idolatry. Each one a substitute for God, and each one ultimately empty. We are not so different. Our idols just look different. A bank account that feels more reliable than prayer. A plan that feels more secure than surrender. A reputation that feels more important than obedience. These are the places where faith gets tested. Living by faith means choosing God's way even when it costs something. It means trusting His provision when resources are thin, His justice when wrongs go unanswered, and His goodness when life is hard. That kind of faith is not passive. It is one of the most active things a person can do.
Bible Verse
"For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, 'The righteous shall live by faith.'" - Romans 1:17
Reflection Question
What is one area of your life where you are relying on your own strength or resources instead of trusting God, and what would it look like to surrender that to Him today?
Quote
"Faith is the confident expectation of the promises of God based on the character of God."
Prayer
God, reveal the places where I have replaced trust in You with trust in myself or in the things of this world. Teach me what it means to truly live by faith. Amen
