Wednesday: "God Is Holy, and That Is Good News"

Devotional

We live in a culture that is uncomfortable with the idea of a holy God. A God who judges, who has standards, who takes sin seriously feels restrictive or even harsh to many people. But here is what we miss when we discard God's holiness: we also lose our sense of awe, our sense of accountability, and ultimately our sense of hope. When God's holiness fades from view, indifference creeps in. If nothing is truly sacred, nothing truly matters. Zephaniah paints a picture of a God who is deeply holy and deeply just. Every morning He shows forth His justice. He does not overlook sin, and He does not look the other way. That might sound intimidating, but it is actually the foundation of real hope. Because the same God who is perfectly holy is also perfectly merciful. His holiness means your sin is taken seriously. His mercy means it has been dealt with, fully and finally, through Jesus Christ. You are not left to manage your failures alone. God's holiness is not something to fear as a believer. It is something to marvel at. It means He is trustworthy, consistent, and good. Every single morning, His mercies are new. That is not a contradiction of His holiness. It is the most beautiful expression of it.

Bible Verse

Her officials within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves that leave nothing till the morning. Her prophets are fickle, treacherous men; her priests profane what is holy; they do violence to the law.  The Lord within her is righteous; he does no injustice; every morning he shows forth his justice; each dawn he does not fail; but the unjust knows no shame. - Zephaniah 3:3-5

Reflection Question

How might a deeper understanding of God's holiness actually increase your sense of gratitude rather than your sense of fear?

Quote

When God's holiness is discarded, you become indifferent to the Lord because there's nothing to fear if God's not holy.

Prayer

Lord, help me to see Your holiness not as something to run from, but as the very reason I can trust You completely. Thank You that Your justice and Your mercy meet perfectly in Jesus. Amen.
