Thursday: The Danger of Misplaced Trust

Devotional
It is easy to look at the woes God pronounced against Babylon and think they do not apply to us. Babylon was violent, greedy, and corrupt on a massive scale. Most of us are just trying to get through the week. But the heart of those woes is not just about extreme evil. It is about misplaced trust. Babylon built its security on wealth, power, and the exploitation of others. It looked to those things for safety, significance, and satisfaction. And God said, none of it will last. That warning hits closer to home than we might like. When our hope is tied to a retirement account, a career, a relationship, or a political outcome, we are building on ground that can shift. Markets crash. Jobs end. People disappoint. Ideologies fail. None of these things were designed to carry the weight of our ultimate hope. The righteous person, by contrast, lives not for gain in this world but for something far more lasting. That does not mean ignoring practical responsibilities. It means holding them loosely, with open hands, trusting that God is the true source of security and provision. This is a daily practice, not a one-time decision. Every day we choose what we will trust. Every day we decide where our hope is anchored. The invitation is to anchor it in the One who does not shift, does not fail, and does not disappoint.
Bible Verse
"Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith." - Habakkuk 2:4
Reflection Question
If your sense of security were stripped away today, what would that reveal about where you have actually been placing your trust?
Quote
"When all my hope is in this world, my hope is in my 401k. Hey guess what? It only takes one downfall in the market to wipe everything out anyways."
Prayer
Lord, show me the places where I have built my security on things that will not last. Help me to hold this world loosely and anchor my hope fully in You. Amen
