Thursday: "Where Your Eyes Are Pointed"

Devotional

Everything changes depending on where you are looking.

When Peter walked on water, he was doing fine until he looked at the waves. The moment his eyes shifted from Jesus to the storm, He started to sink. That is not just a story about Peter. That is a story about all of us.

Suffering has a way of narrowing our vision. It pulls our focus inward and downward, toward the weight of what we are carrying. And when that happens, even small problems can feel unbearable. But Paul offers a different perspective. He calls his own suffering, which included beatings, imprisonment, and shipwreck, a "light and momentary affliction." Not because it was not real, but

because he was comparing it to something far greater.

He was looking at eternity. And eternity changes the math entirely.

Hebrews 12:2 points us to Jesus, who endured the cross by keeping His eyes fixed on the joy set before Him. He did not ignore the pain. He looked past it. That is the invitation for us today. Not to pretend the hard things are not hard, but to fix our eyes on the One who has already overcome them.

Your sight determines your strength. Look to Jesus.

Bible Verse

'Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.' -Hebrews 12:2

Reflection Question

What are you currently most focused on, and how is that focus shaping the way you are experiencing your circumstances?

Quote

This light, momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.

Prayer

Jesus, turn my eyes toward You today. When the weight of life pulls my gaze downward, remind me of the joy set before me and the hope that does not disappoint. Amen.
