Thursday: "Rejoicing When Everything Falls Apart"

Devotional
No figs. No grapes. No grain. No cattle. Nothing. Habakkuk painted a picture of total loss, the kind of devastation that would leave most people in despair. And then he said something that should stop us in our tracks: yet I will rejoice in the Lord. This was not a man in denial. He was fully aware of how bad things were going to get. His body had already trembled at the thought of it. But he made a deliberate, eyes-wide-open choice to rejoice anyway. Not because of his circumstances, but in spite of them. This is what faith actually looks like when it is tested. It is not the faith that says, 'Everything will work out fine.' It is the faith that says, 'Even if it doesn't, God is still God, and He is still good.' You may be in your own version of Habakkuk 3:17 right now. Maybe the job fell through. Maybe the relationship ended. Maybe the diagnosis was not what you hoped. The invitation is the same one Habakkuk accepted: choose to rejoice in who God is, not in what you have. Joy rooted in God cannot be taken from you, because God cannot be taken from you.
Bible Verse
'Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herds in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.' - Habakkuk 3:17-18
Reflection Question
What would it look like for you to choose joy in God today, even in the middle of a circumstance that has not resolved the way you hoped?
Quote
'This is what it means to live by faith, to rejoice in God, no matter the circumstance, to take joy in the God who saves, even in the midst of His justice.'
Prayer
Lord, when everything around me feels like loss, anchor my joy in who You are rather than in what I have. You are enough, and I choose to rejoice in You. Amen.
