Thursday: Courage in the Dark

When David writes about the rod and the staff in Psalm 23, he is not describing decorative tools. These were instruments of protection and rescue. A shepherd used them to fight off predators and to pull wandering sheep back to safety. The Hebrew word for comfort in this psalm carries a meaning that goes deeper than a warm feeling. It means to give courage. God does not just soothe His children in the dark. He strengthens them. He equips them to keep walking. And here is the remarkable thing: if you belong to Jesus Christ and you begin to wander, the Shepherd does not give up on you. He leaves the ninety-nine to come after you. He restores you. He brings you back. But courage in the dark does not come automatically. It comes through staying connected to the Shepherd. His Word is where that courage is found. When we neglect reading Scripture and spending time in prayer, we cut ourselves off from the very source of strength we need most. You do not have to face your hardest moments alone, and you do not have to face them in your own strength. The Shepherd is with you, and His Word is the rod and staff that will steady you.

Prayer

God, thank You that You never stop pursuing me, even when I wander. Help me to stay close to You through Your Word and prayer, so that I can walk with courage no matter what lies ahead. Amen.
