Thursday: "Anchored in Who God Is"

Devotional

When everything around us feels unstable, we need something that cannot move. Habakkuk found that anchor, and it was not a plan or an explanation. It was a Person. In the middle of his confusion, Habakkuk turned his eyes away from his circumstances and fixed them on the character of God. He reminded himself that God is everlasting, that He is holy, and that His purposes cannot be broken. He reached back to what he knew to be true about God even when what He saw did not seem to match. This is one of the most important spiritual disciplines we can develop. Feelings are real, but they are not always reliable guides to truth. When suffering clouds our vision, we need to preach to ourselves what Scripture says about who God is. He is merciful. He is gracious. He is slow to anger. He abounds in steadfast love. These are not wishful thoughts. They are the revealed character of God, declared by His own mouth. When you cannot trace His hand, you can still trust His heart. That truth has carried believers through persecution, loss, and uncertainty for thousands of years. It will carry you too.

Bible Verse

"The Lord passed before Him and proclaimed, 'The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. 7 I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.”- Exodus 34:6-7

Reflection Question

When your circumstances feel overwhelming, which specific truth about God's character do you find hardest to hold onto, and why?

Quote

"When you can't trace his hand, trust his heart. You can know that he is good and merciful and gracious and slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love."

Prayer

God, when we cannot see what You are doing, remind us of who You are. Anchor our hearts in Your character so that our faith does not rise and fall with our circumstances. Amen
