Thursday: "A Better Question to Ask God"

When life gets hard, most of us ask the same question. Where are You, God? It is an honest question. It comes from a real place of pain and confusion. There is nothing wrong with asking it. But there is a better question, one that changes everything about how we see our situation. Micah asked it at the end of his book. After all the grief, all the lament, all the waiting in darkness, he looked up and asked: Who is a God like You? That shift is everything. "Where are You?" keeps our eyes on the problem. "Who are You?" turns our eyes toward God Himself. It is an invitation. It says, God, I want to know You more. I want You to show me who You are in the middle of this. And what Micah discovered when he asked that question is breathtaking. He found a God who pardons. A God who does not hold onto His anger. A God whose compassion runs deeper than His judgment. A God who delights in steadfast love. When you are suffering, when things feel hopeless, try shifting the question. Stop asking where God is and start asking who He is. You may be surprised by what He reveals about Himself in the asking.

Think about a current struggle in your life. How might asking "Who are You, God?" instead of "Where are You, God?" change the way you approach that situation?

God, teach me to seek Your face, not just Your hand. In my hardest moments, help me to ask who You are and to trust what You reveal
